The Department of Anaesthesia, Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe was established in July 2006, with the coming back of the pioneer Consultant Anaesthetist and Head of Department Prof. Sadiq Adamu.
However, prior to this the Anaesthesia service was solely administered by the Nurse Anaesthetists, under Anaesthesia Unit of Nursing Services Department. From the time of the establishment of the department to date, it has witnessed tremendous progress of achievement in both staffing and equipment.
The department has five Consultants, Resident doctors, Nurse Anaesthetists, Anaesthetic Technicians and other supporting staff. We have also progressed judged by the clinical services we render such as general Anaesthesia, Spinal Anaesthesia, Epidural anaesthesia/ analgesia in labour, Other regional blocks, Pain management, Resuscitation/emergency services and intensive care management.
We have also been involved in training of resident doctors from other departments like Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Casualty officers as part of their minimum requirement for postgraduate residency training.
The department is also involved in training the hospital staff on Basic Life Support..
The clinical services we render such as general Anaesthesia, Spinal Anaesthesia, Epidural anaesthesia/ analgesia in labour, other regional blocks, sedation for MRI and endoscopy patients, Pain management, Resuscitation/emergency services, intensive care management, palliative care and patients transport
Our target is to get an excellent robust anaesthesia and intensive care department provides qualitative training and progressive researches that will infact positively to the practice of anaesthesia and intensive care administration to the poor patients that can meet the demand of the hospital in such services with current knowledge, skills, facilities and tele-medical communication
We have been involved in training of resident doctors for both part I and part II in the department and medical students in anaesthesia, Pain management, Resuscitation/emergency services and intensive care patients’ management. We have also been involved in training of resident doctors from other departments like Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, medicine and Casualty officers as part of their minimum requirement for postgraduate residency training. The department is also involved in training the hospital staff on Basic Life Support.
